Watershed Education

Watershed education is core to the International Water Institute mission. We use a cross-curricular
approach to watershed science utilizing the “4 C’s”:
     – Challenge participants to collect and think critically about scientific data
     – Create a sense of responsibility and stewardship for local waterways
     – Connect learners to their local rivers through experiential learning opportunities
     – Cultivate interest and appreciation for watershed science careers and opportunities

Education in the Basin

The International Water Institute takes a watershed-based, cross-curricular approach to learning. We strive to introduce students to their local watershed, allowing them to connect to the world around them both upstream and downstream. We do this by educating students in their home watershed as well as connecting them with schools throughout the basin. River Watch

Water quality monitoring since 1995 across the Red River Basin. Serving communities in North Dakota and Minnesota. River Watch monitors are at the ready to capture information for peak precipitation events. It is not uncommon for them to work long days, weekends, and holidays to best serve both our human and the natural communities in the basin.

River Watch includes water quality monitoring, River Explorers kayaking trips, macroinvertebrate sampling, and the annual River Watch Forum.

An introduction for elementary school students to the connectivity of our planet’s water supply, emphasizing different scales of focus, and how our subwatersheds fit into the bigger picture. Hands-on learning that stays with kids for a lifetime … for the good of us all.

Adult Education and Community Engagement

IWI offers experential learning for all ages. Classroom and field workshops can be tailored to your organization’s needs. Facilitated discussions can identify common ground among community members for water and resource management topics.
