2020 River Watch Forum

20/20: A Clear Vision for the Red River Basin

River Watch has been engaging students since 1995, making the 2020 Forum the 25th Anniversary of River Watch!

To celebrate 25 years of River Watch, students were challenged to build upon the previous 25 years of watershed education by designing programs to meet a current education programming gap; k-3rd graders or adults.  Students were meant to gather together at the Alerus Center in March to celebrate 25 years and announce the winners of this year’s project.

Due to COVID-19, the in-person event was cancelled and a series of videos were released the first week in May:

Red Lake County Central

The team from Red Lake County Central created an educational program geared towards 3rd graders, teaching them about Aquatic Invasive Species and how to prevent their spread utilizing a Clean, Drain, Dry game.

Larimore

Larimore tied to recieve the silver plaque for their Watershed Extravaganza, which led the 3rd graders of Larimore through a “tour” of the Turtle Watershed complete with fun stations and blue slushies!

Climax-Shelly

Climax-Shelly tied for silver with their Adult Citizen Science Education Program – teaching decision makers in the Sand Hill Watershed about water quality monitoring and why it is important.

Norman County East

NCE took home the bronze award for their education program created around the concept of Beavers and their watershed.

Stephen-Argyle Central

Stephen developed an education program that involved 3rd graders participating in skits related to watershed concepts such as AIS and Runoff.

2020 Manager’s Choice Award 

Cavalier

Cavalier mapped out a mural of their watershed and worked with the 3rd graders to put all the pieces together to explore the Tongue River together.  The mural was then displayed at their school so that students could share with their peers.

2020 People’s Choice Awards

For this year’s forum, all River Watch Team members and their advisors were given the opportunity to view all project videos and flyers and were then able to vote for their favorite!
